The Colorado Rockies who sit in last place in the N.L. West can do nothing now but play the role of spoiler as they hope to set the Giants back in the up coming three game series at AT&T Park starting Tuesday night.
The Giants are in a multiple second place tie for the Wild Card in the N.L. race and are just 2.5 games behind the Padres. The Giants who beat San Diego in the first two games of last weekend's three game series lost a crucial third game in a blow out 10-2 on Sunday.
The Giants are also four games out of the N.L. West with three weeks left in the season. The Rockies on Tuesday night will start Denny Bautista (0-2 ERA 5.66). The Rockies have lost four of the last five games in which Bautista was pitching.
The Giants will start Jonathan Sanchez (3-0 ERA 1.42) Sanchez won his third game in his last outing over the Reds on September 6th for a 3-2 victory.
The Giants owner Peter Magowan said that Barry Bonds has sent mixed signals over the past season as to whether he wants to retire, come back, or leave San Francisco.
Lately Bonds has said he wanted to stay in San Francisco. Magowan doesn't really know what Bonds wants to do, "It just depends on where discussions with him assuming we have them, would go, you go off and assuming we wanted to make an offer to him, whats the response going to be? Is it going to be, 'we'll get back to you after we've checked out what might be out there', or 'gosh, we we're expecting some offer from the Giants. We're delighted to have one. Let's sign today,' said Magowan.
It's probable that Bonds will not be signed by the Giants and by any other MLB club.
He will get the same treatment Rickey Henderson got when Henderson tried to come back to the majors but this one will have more of a twist to it since Bond's name has been latched on to places like steroids and BALCO.
The Commissioner who has made it no secret that he is no admirer of Bonds and said he didn't want to acknowledge Bonds accolades as he passed Babe Ruth for second on the all time home run list and now may have to be face acknowledging Bonds if he makes number one passing Hank Aaron.
With a wink and a nod by the Commissioner to the owners it could make it difficult for Bonds to find a club that'll take him. So many players who were connected to his trainer Greg Anderson have been implicated or accused of steroid use that this would be the only way baseball can get back at Bonds by keeping him out and not allowing him to sign with a club and set the home run record.
Bonds is 24 homers short and can cut that number to as low as 15-13 before the end of the season. But if other clubs keep him out and the Giants decide that they can manage without him it'll make for interesting headlines come next April.
First pitch at AT&T on Tuesday night 7:15PM.
