SAN FRANCISCO-The San Francisco Giants took it in the shorts by the score of 10-2 by the San Diego Padres on Sunday at AT&T Park, in the third and final game of the series in which the Giants had won the first two games, and the Padres avoided a sweep.
With the loss the Giants dropped a full game behind San Diego, in the Wild Card race, San Francisco is now 1 ½ games behind the Padres. In the Division race, the Giants are
currently 3 ½ games behind the first place Los Angeles Dodgers.
Padres’ pitcher Woody Williams (W, 8-5 ERA 3.79) pitched masterfully going six innings, six hits, one run, and three strike outs. The Giants could only score one run off Williams. The Giants scored their second run of the game off former Giant and Padre reliever Alan Embree.
The Padres had two innings in which they scored four runs each time. In the top of the third Brian Giles singled in two runs, Todd Walker doubled scoring Giles, and Russell Branyan had an RBI single that scored Walker making it 4-0 Padres.
The Padres had a 6-2 lead going into the top of the ninth and the Padres started hitting away again with a double by Giles for an RBI and an RBI single by Adrian Gonzalez. Manny Alexander ripped a double to left for two runs, and that was all the runs the Padres would get Sunday night for the 10-2 win.
The Giants Matt Morris got ripped for six runs on 11 hits in five innings of work. Morris (L, 10-13 ERA 4.71) has lost his last two starts after Sunday's match.
JC and Kenny G's Giant footnotes: Giants outfielder Moises Alou who hit a triple against the Padres on Friday hit his first triple since September 25, 2005 which was the Giants 44th triple for the season which is four shy of the San Francisco record set in 1991.
Giant pitcher Noah Lowry has been throwing balls from the outfield during batting practice and shagging to test his throwing arm. Lowry had damage on his throwing elbow but a recent MRI showed that Lowry has no further damage and threw off the pitchers mound at AT&T on Saturday.
Lowry may start on Wednesday. Lowry who pitched 5.2 innings for one run and two hits in his last game was replaced by Jonathan Sanchez.
Matt Morris, who was ripped by Padre pitching on Sunday and lost his second straight start, was bumped up in the rotation. Right hander Brad Hennessey was slated to start on Sunday something tells the Giants maybe manager Felipe Alou should have stayed with the original rotation.
Armando Benitez complaining of arthritic knees didn't pitch in relief over the weekend at AT&T and has missed five games in a row for relief duty.
Right hander Brian Wilson is suffering from oblique tightness which is messing up his wind up. Wilson is day to day according to Giants manager Felipe Alou and trainer Stan Conte. Wilson will not be rushed and the Giants don't want to make his injury worse.
Giants’ owner Peter McGowan said before the ball game that he's still undecided on signing Barry Bonds who wants to end his career in San Francisco. McGowan is torn between the baggage that Bonds brings to the game with the steroids/BALCO controversy and the fact that he's a drawing card for the Giants. McGowan has until December 6th to decide before going to arbitration with Bonds which could also mean Bonds could start looking for work else where meaning he could tie Hank Aaron's record in another uniform.
The Giants open a three game series with Colorado on Tuesday night at AT&T. The Giants need this series to gain some momentum on the Padres. Although this would have been the series to sweep the Pads and get a half game out with 20 games left the Giants still have the opportunity to gain on the Pads in the wild card if they can take two out of three from the Rockies in the upcoming series.
Tuesday night matches: The Rockies will go with starter Denny Bautista (0-2 ERA 5.66) the Rockies have lost four of the last five games in which Bautista has pitched in. The Giants will be going with Jonathan Sanchez (3-0 ERA 1.42) Sanchez has been throwing the ball well and Alou has kept him out there. Particularly Alou really wants to get a look at Sanchez. Sanchez who has relieved will start Tuesday night won in his last outing 3-2 over Cincinnati on September 6th.
First pitch at AT&T on Tuesday night 7:15PM PDT.
