SAN FRANCISCO-Sooner or later, San Francisco Giants pitcher Matt Cain will throw a no-hitter and absolutely no one will be surprised.
In his last starts versus the San Diego Padres alone, the 21-year old has allowed just two hits to the team leading the National Wild Card race.
Cain allowed just one hit in seven innings of work, as the Giants defeated the Padres 4-0 before 38,988 at AT&T Park.
Brian Giles got the only hit off of Cain, when he singled just out of the reach of Ray Durham at second base with one out in the top of the sixth inning.
Moises Alou tripled in the second inning, and hit his 17th home run of the season in the bottom of the eighth inning that gave the Giants a little bit more breathing, as they stay four games behind the division leading Los Angeles Dodgers, who shutout the New York Mets 5-0 at Shea Stadium and pull within two and a half games of the Wild Card leading Padres.
It was the first triple of the season for Alou, who last tripled on September 25, 2005 against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.
Ray Durham is also on a hot streak, as the second baseman picked up a hit for the 24th game out of his last 27.
Randy Winn got the Giants on the board in the bottom of the first inning after he singled and then scored on a groundout by Shea Hillenbrand.
NOTES: The Giants will try and make it two in a row, as they will Jason Schmidt to the mound, while the Padres will send David Wells to the hill.
Giants Minor League Notes: The Augusta GreenJackets, the short-season single A team in the South Atlantic League advanced to the League Championship Series after defeating the Rome Braves. The GreenJackets will now face the Lakewood BlueClaws of the Philadelphia Phillies organization.
In other minor league news, the Salem-Keizer Giants evened up their Northwest League Championship series versus the Boise Hawks (Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim) with a 5-0 victory.
Adam Cowart threw a three-hit complete game for the Giants versus the Hawks.
