Photo Bonds, Giants win 4-2 over Cubs in homerun fest

The San Francisco Giants faced off with the Chicago Cubs this afternoon at Wrigley Field in which both teams scored a total of six runs between them, and the Giants scored their four runs due to home runs, and the Cubs scored on one homer, but it wasn't enough as the Giants had a 4-2 victory, and even the series at 1-1.

Barry Bonds, Ray Durham, and Moses Alou all homered for the Giants, contributing to three of the four runs the Giants had in the game.

Bonds started off the scoring in this game in the top of the fourth off of the Cubs starter Sean Marshall, on a ball that was hit to deep right for his 728th career homer, giving the Giants a 1-0 lead.

Chicago scored the only run of the game that wasn't tied to a homer, when Ronny Cedeno bunted, allowing Derek Lee to score from third, which tied the game 1-1.

The top of the sixth was what would do in Cubs starting pitcher Steve Marshall, as he walked Bonds with two outs, and then Ray Durham had has 21st homer of the season, which scored Bonds to make the score 3-1 San Francisco. Up next was Moises Alou, who then followed Durham with a homer to deep left also, which then made the score 4-1, San Francisco.

Marshall was done after he walked Pedro Feliz, and the Giants couldn't score any more. Marshall (5-9), was assesed with the loss, in his 5 2/3 innings of work, he gave up 5 hits, 4 runs, walked 2 and struck out 1, and gave up three home runs.

Chicago had the final tally in the game in the bottom of the ninth when Derek Lee took closer Armando Benitez deep to left, which made the final score 4-2.

Giants starter Matt Cain (11-9) pitched 7 2/3 innings, giving up 4 hits, 1 run, walked two and struck out 7. Even though Benitez gave up the homer to Lee in the bottom of the ninth, he only pitched 1/3 of inning and was awared a hold. Vinnie Chulk had his fourth save of the season going 1/3 of an inning in the bottom of the eight when he relieved Cain.

Mike Stanton had his fourth save of the season with the 2/3 of a inning he pitched in the bottom of the ninth.

Giants Notes:

San Francisco finds themselves six games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers for first place in the National League West Division, and are now 2.5 games behind San Diego, along with Florida, Cincinnati and Philadelphia still ahead of them.

On Sunday, the final game of this series, Jason Schmidt(10-8,3.37era) will face Chicago's Angel Guzman (0-4,7.20 era) in a 11:20 PDT start in Chicago.
