When the game first started, it looked the San Francisco Giants would be on their way to their fourth straight win, with a two homers in the top of the first. Unfortunately, somebody forgot to tell the Atlanta Braves that the Giants were a hot team making a run at the playoffs, and turned the tables on the Giants by taking a seven run lead at one point in the game.

Shea Hillenbrand smashed a home run, and Barry Bonds hit two; however it was not enough as the Braves defeated the Giants 13-8, in game one of their three-game series at Tuner Field.

It was the first two-home run for Bonds this season, and the first since August 29, 2004, exactly, ironically against the Braves at Turner Field.

Hillenbrand went 3-for-4 at the plate, while Bonds went 2-for-3 with those two home runs, number 18 and 19 on the season.

And it was to be a game of two back-to-back home runs, as Hillenbrand’s homer in the top of 1st, was then followed by Bonds’ 1st of the game of Atlanta’s Tim Hudson.

In the bottom of the fourth, it was Giants’ Jason Schmidt’s turn to give up two back-to-back homers, the first one to Chipper Jones, which scored Edgar Renteria and ironically, Hudson who was on base also. Then Schmidt gave up the second homer to Andruw Jones right after that.

Schmidt was roughed up for eight runs in just 3 1/3 innings of work, asides from the eight runs, Schmidt also gave up seven hits before Felipe Alou finally saw enough.

Tim Hudson, the former A’s pitcher was just as ineffective, as he gave up four runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings of work, but Hudson went on to get the victory, his eleventh of the season.

Hillenbrand went 3-for-4 at the plate, while Bonds went 2-for-3 with those two home runs, number 18 and 19 on the season.

With the two home runs on the night, Bonds is just 28 home runs behind the all-time record of 755 held by Braves legend Hank Aaron.

The Giants defense was futile, as they committed four errors, including two by Pedro Feliz, and one by Moises Alou on a bobble, and rookie shortstop Tomas de la Rosa on a ground ball miss.

The Giants, even though down 9-2 by the sixth inning, did start to make an effort to mount a comeback, with two runs in the top of the sixth, off of Bonds’ second homer of the night, which ironically scored Hillenbrand. In the top of the eight, San Francisco score once, and in the top of the ninth, scored three more runs before the game was over for the 13-8 final.

Giants Notes:

Game 2 of this series will have Brad Hennessey (5-3, 3.39 ERA) going for the Giants, and Atlanta will have Chuck James (6-3, 4.15 ERA) going for Atlanta with a 4:35 PDT start.
