Matt Morris finally showed the San Francisco Giants what he is capable of doing in a big game situation.
Despite giving up a first inning home run to Ken Griffey, Jr., Morris settled down and gave up just two more hits and the Giants defeated the Cincinnati Reds 4-1 at AT&T Park.
Morris did not allow another run for the rest of the game, and retired the final batters he faced.
He even helped out his own cause, as he lashed a two-run double that gave the Giants a three-run cushion in the bottom of the eighth inning.
With the win, Morris also ended a seven-start winless streak, as the Giants try to stay in the thick of the playoff race in the National League West and in the National League wild card race as well.
Shea Hillenbrand hit a home run off of former Oakland A’s pitcher Aaron Harang in the bottom of third inning.
Besides the home run to Griffey, the only hits more gave up were doubles to Ryan Freel and Edwin Encarnacion.
Omar Vizquel had two hit and stole three bases to help the Giants onto victory, and even up this four game series at a game apiece.
Giants Notes:
The Giants now have a 12-11 record for the month of August, and during this period, the San Francisco had a 5 game losing streak, along with a 5 game winning streak along the way.
Also, with 33 games left, the Giants find themselves 4 games out of first behind the Dodgers in the Western Division, and for the Wild Card race, the Giants are 4 games behind the Cincinnati Reds and in the fifth spot in that race.
On Saturday, the Reds will have Bronson Arroyo (10-8, 3.44 era) on the mound against
the Giants Noah Lowry (6-7, 3.92 era) for a 1:05 start at AT&T.
