SAN FRANCISCO-This was not the way that the San Francisco Giants wanted to start a nine-game home stand.
The Florida Marlins, who are presently in the thick of the National League East Pennant race and came to San Francisco and defeated the Giants 6-0 before 33,098 at AT&T Park.
With the loss, the Giants fall to 28-36 at home and to 53-72 on the season.
It was a fantastic night for Nolasco, as he went nine innings, giving up just two hits, while walking one and striking out 11.
This was the first complete game by a Marlins pitcher in 301 games.
Randy Winn got the first hit off of Nolasco in the bottom of the first inning, and that would the only hit that Nolasco would give up until he gave up a hit to Pablo Sandoval doubled with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning.
The Marlins jumped on Giants starter Kevin Correia in the very first inning, as Jeremy Hermida reached on a Travis Ishikawa error and later scored on a Mike Jacobs ground out.
Ishikawa committed his second error of the game in the second inning, as former DeLaSalle product John Baker was able to reach second base.
Baker, who also played at CAL and later in the Oakland A’s organization scored on a Hermida groundout to Emmanuel Burris.
It was in the fifth inning that the Marlins broke it wide open, as they scored three runs off of Correia, who was eventually pulled by Bruce Bochy.
Dan Uggla singled with one out, then Cody Ross singled and Baker hit a single to score Uggla from second base.
Nolasco then doubled in two runs to score Ross and Baker.
Correia went just 4.2 innings, giving up five runs (three of them earned) on seven hits, while three and not striking out a single batter.
Alex Hinshaw gave up a towering home run to Jorge Cantu in the top of the sixth inning; it was the 22nd home run of the season for the slugging third baseman.
In what looked an easy out, Ivan Ochoa dropped a popup in the top of the sixth inning that Uggla to reach first base with one out.
Baker went three-for-four at the plate, and also reached on an error by Ishikawa in the top of the second inning and also was intentionally walked in the top of the third inning.
NOTES: Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who is an ardent fan of the New York Yankees, made an appearance at the game.
Giuliani, who was wearing a blue shirt, was booed by the Giants faithful when his face was shown on the scoreboard.
The Giants will look to even up the series when they send Matt Cain to the hill, while the Marlins will send Scott Olson to the AT&T mound.
