The St. Louis Cardinals put together a five-run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning on Aug. 19, sending the San Francisco Giants to a 5-4 defeat at Busch Stadium.

Jim Edmonds' two-run double with two outs capped the dramatic comeback, It was the third time (in 43 tries) that St. Louis came from behind after eight innings this season.

The win kept St. Louis starter Chris Carpenter's nine-game winning streak intact. Carpenter, who leads the major leagues with 17 victories, hasn't lost since June 8. Julian Tavarez (2-2) allowed an inherited runner to score in the ninth but got three outs for the win.

A three-run homer by Yadier Molina, his sixth of the year, kept the rally going after the Cardinals opened the ninth with four straight hits off closer Tyler Walker. John Mabry doubled and So Taguchi had a single preceding Molina's blast.

A single by pinch-hitter John Rodriguez knocked out Walker. Jeremy Accardo (8-3) was greeted with a one-out single by Abraham Nunez and, after another out, Edmonds hit the game-winner off the right field wall on the first pitch from Jason Christiansen.

Giants Manager Felipe Alou used four pitchers in the eighth inning when the Cardinals put runners on first and second with one out.

San Francisco starter Brad Hennessey allowed five hits over 7 1/3 innings for the Giants, who got home runs from Omar Vizquel and Ray Durham.

J.T. Snow, Moises Alou and Durham opened the ninth inning with consecutive singles to give San Francisco a 3-0 lead and chase Carpenter. Second baseman Mark Grudzielanek's throwing error while going for a double play allowed a fourth Giants run to score from second.

Carpenter, who leads the major leagues in victories, gave up four runs -- three earned -- and nine hits in eight-plus innings.

Giants-Cardinals Notes: Carpenter has worked seven or more innings in 11 straight starts, six of them complete games ... Molina's home run was his first since being activated off the 15-day disabled list on Thursday without a rehab assignment. Molina missed 33 games with a broken hand ... Vizquel committed only his fifth error of the season in the fifth inning on a potential double play ball ... Matheny, a fan favorite with the Cardinals from 2000-04, got a standing ovation during his first at-bat ... A crowd of 46,200 was the Cardinals' 33rd sellout and 25th straight crowd above 40,000 in the club's final season at Busch Stadium ... Moises Alou was activated from the DL before the game ... Taguchi singled in the ninth, extending his hitting streak to 12 games.
