For only the second time all season quiet and unpredictable Giants pitcher Barry Zito was involved in a shutout throwing seven plus innings in beating the Atlanta Braves in a 5-0 seven hit win for the San Francisco Giants at Tuner Field in Atlanta.
The last shutout came on August 2nd in San Diego a three hitter, which was the result of a 2-0 masterpiece by Zito. Zito who has lost 15 games this year has either been hot or cold but mostly cold on the mound for most of the season. After throwing the August 2 shut out against the Padres which accounted for Zito's last vicotry he went down two times afterwards losing to the Dodgers and Astros by scores of 6-2. The win on Monday night represented Zito's first win since Aug 2nd.
Zito with the win improved his record to (W,7-15) ERA 5.43. Zito had all of his stuff going for him in the contest. His breaking ball was doing the stuff it used to do during his winning days at least two years back. No Braves hitter had more than one hit in the ball game and Zito scattered five hits in seven innings in the game.
On offense for San Francisco the Giants grabbed three runs in the top of the first inning wasting no time. Giants outfielder Dave Roberts scored on Aaron Rowand's sac fly to left for a 1-0 Giant lead.
Later that inning Rich Aurilia hit a single to right to score Ivan Ochoa to post a 2-0 Giant lead. The Giants added one more run when Pablo Sandoval hit an RBI single that scored Travis Ishirawa for the 3-0 lead.
Rowand in the top of the sixth went yard for his 12th homer of the season a belt deep over the left field fence for a 4-0 Giants lead.
In the top of the 7th Dave Roberts walked and then Emmanuel Buriss scored on Atlanta catcher Brian McCann's throwing error that gave San Francisco a 5-0 lead.
Final notes: Braves pitcher Tom Glavine will be examined for a sore left elbow by Dr.James Andrews in Birmingham. Glavine who last pitched on August 14th in a 11-7 loss against the Cubs. The Braves have now lost five straight games in which Glavine has pitched, the loss to the Cubs being the last of those five losses.
The Giants took three of four from the Braves in the four game series at Turner Field the wins barely put a dent in their chase on the first place Diamondbacks and Dodgers. The Giants are still a whopping double-digit 11 games off the pace in the N.L. West.
The Giants brass are doing a study of who will be playing the hot corner for the team next season. Ryan Rohlinger who went 0-3 on Sunday is now 2-18 since coming up to the show.
The Giants are eyeing someone to really hold the position for a while after they lost their regular third baseman in the off-season Pedro Feliz to Philadelphia.
Some prospects include some big name free agents after the season that have surfaced, Adrian Beltre, Casey Blake, Joe Crede, or Hank Blalock.
Tuesday's starters: The Giants return home on Tuesday night at AT&T Park and will face the Florida Marlins. The Marlins will be starting Ricky Nolasco (11-7) ERA 3.88. Nolasco is a right-hander. The Giants will start right-hander Kevin Correia (2-6) ERA 5.12. First pitch is slated for 7:15PM PDT.
