Don’t count these Giants out just yet.
Just when the book was about to be closed on their 2006 season, the Giants have found a way to make things a little interesting, and to give themselves a narrow chance in the National League West.
Despite a ninth-inning grand slam off the bat of San Diego Padres pinch hitter Josh Barfield on Thursday afternoon, the Giants had enough runs in the bag and were able to sweep the four-game series from the Padres by virtue of an 8-4 win at Petco Park.
Rookie Matt Cain got the victory by going 5 1/3 scoreless innings and giving up only one hit - even though he walked six hitters - and recording eight strikeouts.
Meanwhile, Jake Peavy, an All-Star-caliber pitcher who has had a nightmare of a season, dropped his record to 6-12 even though he gave up only three runs over seven strong innings.
The Giants teed off on San Diego’s bullpen in the final two innings, scoring five runs in that span and giving the Giants’ own faulty bullpen enough leeway to make Barfield’s slam a footnote.
In the eighth, Steve Finley and Shea Hillenbrand each collected run-scoring singles off Jon Adkins, while the Giants played long ball with unwilling participant Scott Williamson in the ninth to pad their lead a little more.
Pedro Feliz hit a solo homer while Kevin Frandsen, who was recalled this week after Jose Vizcaino was designated for assignment, lined a two-run shot, his first major league home run that made its way over the left-field wall to give the Giants a commanding 8-0 lead.
The Giants, who currently sit six games behind the first-place Dodgers, will host the division front-runners for a three-game series that starts Friday night.
