SAN FRANCISCO-This was definitely not the way that the San Francisco Giants wanted to finish a seven-game homestand against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Just like last weekend, when the Giants were swept by the San Diego Padres at Petco Park, the Pirates came into San Francisco and swept the Giants, winning the series finale 5-0 before 41,976 at AT&T Park.

Barry Zito got into trouble in the very first inning, as he walked three consecutive batters to start the game; however, he was able to get out of the jam without allowing a run or a hit.

The Pirates got on the board in the second inning, when Jose Castillo doubled off Zito, went to third on a Tom Gorzelanny ground out and scored when former Dodgers infielder Cesar Izturis singled off Zito.

Josh Phelps made it 3-0 in the top of the sixth inning, as he hit the first pitch he saw from Zito over the left-center field wall.

Phelps made it 5-0, as he launched a triple off the center-field wall that scored Izturis and Jose Bautista.

Zito went six innings, giving up three runs (all earned), Zito also gave up six hits, and he walked three and struck out on his way to his 11th loss of the season.

On the opposite side of the diamond, Gorzelanny went nine innings, giving up zero runs, on five hits; he also walked one and struck out four on his way to his 11th win of the season.

This was the first career shutout for Gorzelanny, who raises his career record versus the Giants to 2-0. Last season, Gorzelanny defeated the Giants on June 29, 2006 at PNC Park. Gorzelanny went seven innings, giving up two runs on six hits, one walk and struck out five.

The offense was so anemic that the Giants failed to have a runner reach base after Daniel Ortmeier grounded into a fielders’ choice in the bottom of the fourth inning.

After Ortmeier reached on the fielders’ choice, no other Giants player was able to reach base for the remainder of the game, as Gorzelanny retired the last 17 batters he faced.
