The San Francisco Giants woes continued as they lost their fourth game in a row to the first place Los Angeles Dodgers by the score of 6-5 this afternoon at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles. With this loss, the Giants now find themselves 6.5 games behind the Dodgers, and in last place in the National League West.

One bright spot in this game was the fact after the Dodgers had taken a 3-0 lead by the bottom of the 2nd, the Giants were still able to make a comeback in the fourth inning and tied the game, and took the lead for the only time in the game with one run in top fifth, but that would the only time the Dodgers gave up the lead.

The Dodgers scored two runs in the bottom of the first, when Julio Lugo doubled to left off of Giants’ starter Matt Cain, which scored Kenny Lofton. JD Drew than singled to center, scoring Lugo, which then gave the Dodgers a 2-0 lead.

LA struck again in the bottom of the second, when James Loney tripled to right, and then starting pitcher Brad Penny helped his own cause by singled to second, which scored Loney, to give the Dodgers a 3-0 lead.

Finally in the top of the fourth, the Giants started to get to Brad Penny, and Steve Finley started the inning with a double. Ray Durham had a single, which then scored Finley from third. Barry Bonds then followed with a drive to center, but Durham was stuck at 3rd and Bonds at 2nd.

Moises Alou followed up with a drive to left field, which then scored Durham and Bonds, which then tied the game at 3-3.

But the Dodgers made their move in the bottom of the fourth when Loney doubled to right, and then Brad Penny moved him to third on a sacrifice to Matt Cain. Rafael Furcal followed with a single to center which scored Loney to give the Dodgers a 4-3 lead.

The top of the fifth, Steve Finley was on base due a fielding error by Lugo, and then Finley stole second, and Omar Vizquel singled to left scoring Finley, which tied the game again 4-4. With Vizquel on third, Ray Durham flied out ending the inning.

The bottom of the fifth was to be the end of Matt Cain when he gave up a two-run homer to LA’s Wilson Betemit, to make the score 6-4 Los Angeles. Cain ended his day going 4 innings, giving up 10 hits, and gave up six earned runs for his afternoon of work.

Omar Vizquel helped to cut the Dodgers lead to one run in the top of the seventh when doubled to right, scoring Todd Linden from second to make the score 6-5 Dodgers, and that would be all the scoring in the game.

Matt Cain was assessed with the loss, dropping his record to 8-9 for the season. This was Cain’s second career start against the Dodgers, and that was on July 6th, and he also only went four innings, and he gave up 3 runs in a non-decision.

Brad Penny improved his record to 13-5, with his six innings of work, in which he gave up 7 hits, and 4 runs. He struck out seven Giants in the game.

Giants/Dodgers Notes:
