The San Francisco Giants were swept in the conclusion of a six game road trip by the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park this afternoon by the score of 2-1 in extra innings. The Pirates won the first two games of the series by the scores of 3-0 and 4-3.
The well pitched ball game by both teams took 2:58 to play but it seemed much longer than that in an afternoon affair than a 10 inning ball game.
Scoring didn’t start in this game until the later innings when the Giants opened up in the top of the eighth inning when Todd Linden put the Giants on the scoreboard with his first homer of the season to put San Francisco up 1-0.
The Pirates came right back with a Jose Castillo homer his 12th of the year to tie it up 1-1 in the bottom of the eighth inning with a shot to deep center.
The Pirates broke the deadlock in the bottom of the tenth when Jose Hernandez hit into a RBI single to score the Bucs Jack Wilson for the gamer and a 2-1 Pirate win.
For the Pirates reliever John Grabow gets the win (W, 3-1 ERA 4.-03) the Giants Steve Kline gets the loss (L, 2-3 ERA 3.48).
Stefani's Giant footnotes: Sunday's game was long and drawn out due to rain in the 7th inning. The rain delay lasted 2 hours and five minutes. Plus having extra's on top of it the Giants after the game packed up for the long flight back to San Francisco where they'll have to turn it around and face the Washington Nationals for three games.
Pedro Astacio (1-1 ERA 5.06) gets the call for Washington and for San Francisco Noah Lowry (5-6 ERA 4.16) first pitch is at 7:15PM PDT at AT&T.
The Giants in the N.L. West are slipping in to third place four games back behind first place San Diego.
