The San Francisco Giants continued their season high losing streak to six games, with a 4-3 loss tonight to the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park, in a game that Giants starter Jamey Wright lost his 9th game of the season, and the Pirates starter Tom Gorzelanny had his first major league carrier victory.
This was Gorzelanny’s fifth career start, and he was called up in September of last year and made one start, with four starts in the month of July with no victories, and two losses to his credit, one against New York on July 6th, and his other loss came on July 18th against Colorado.
In this game, San Francisco scored first in the top of the first when Ray Durham scored on double from Barry Bonds to give the Giants the first lead 1-0.
Pittsburgh evened things up in the bottom of 2nd when Gorzelanny advanced his own cause by grounding out to third, which then scored Jeromy Burnitz from third to tie the score 1-1. This was also Gorzelanny’s first career RBI.
The Pirates scored twice more in the bottom of the third, when Ronny Paulino singled to right scoring Jason Bay, and Joe Randa went to third on the play. Next up was Jose Castillo had a ground rule double to center, scoring Randa, giving the Pirates a 3-1 lead.
San Francisco scored again in the top of the 5th when Omar Vizquel singled to center, scoring Randy Winn from second, making the score 3-2 Giants. The Pirates came right back in the bottom of the fifth when Burnitz had his 15th homer of the season, making the score 4-2, which was the end of the scoring in the game.
Burnitz now hit 14 of his 15 homers this season off of right handed pitchers.
Gorzelanny pitched 7 innings, giving up 6 hits, and 2 earned runs for his first major league career victory, and his record is now 1-2 for the season. The Giants Jason Wright’s record now drops to 6-9, with his 6 innings of work, seven hits and four earned runs, and one homer. Pittsburgh’s Mike Gonzalez had his 18th save of the season with his one inning of work in the top of the ninth.
Giants/Pirates Notes:
The Giants acquired another pitcher on Saturday, with left hander Mike Stanton coming from the Washington Nationals, in turn for minor league right hander Sharion Martis.
Stanton has 3-5 record this season, with a 4.47 ERA, and has been in 56 games going
44 1/3 innings of work. Stanton last appeared on the mound on last Wednesday against the Giants and pitched 2/3 of inning giving up one hit.
Martis, was with the Augusta Greenjackets, a Single-A affiliate of the Giants in the South Atlantic League. Martis with 6-4 record, 3.64 ERA, in 15 starts in 76 2/3 innings of work so far in the 2006 season.
Wright’s career record at PNC Park now drops to 1-6. Also in the last six loses, the Giants have lost by a total of 9 games.
Pirates’ Freddy Sanchez was 0-4 in today’s game and broke his hitting streak of eight games at home. During the last eight home games, Sanchez was 15-34 with a .382 average.
With the win today, the Pirates now extend their winning streak to four straight games, which ties their season high streak for four wins in a row at the end of May.

Sunday’s Starters:
The Pirates will have Zach Duke on the mound on Sunday to end this series. Duke (7-9, 5.51 ERA), will be making his 23rd start of the season. He has faced the Giants once in his career on June 8, when he pitched 6 inning, giving up 6 hits, 3 runs, and struck out three, but didn’t have a decision on 5-4 Giants victory.
On the mound for the Giants will be Matt Morris. Morris (8-8, 4.82ERA), will be making his 22 start of the season, and currently leads the team with 8 wins. This will be his second start of this season against the Pirates. Last faced Pittsburgh at AT&T Park, and was charged with a loss, going 8 innings, giving up 8 hits and 3 runs in that outing.
In his career, Morris has a 10-6 record against Pittsburgh.
