"Set-Game-Match" was the battle cry in the stands in
Wrigley Field Wednesday afternoon as the Chicago Cubs'
Jeromy Burnitz lead the celebrants with a 4-3 victory
over the San Francisco Giants.
The Cubs were down 3-2 when Derrek Lee lead off the
eighth inning with a single off former Cub reliever
LaTroy Hawkins. Armais Ramirez faced new Giant pitcher
Scott Eyre and hit an infield single. Pinch-hitter
Matt Murton came to the plate with runners at first
and second and hit a fly in the bright Chicago sun in
right field that Michael Tucker misjudged and it fell
in front of him to allow Lee to score to tie the game.
The Cubs would never look back.
In the last of the ninth, the Cubs had pinch-hitter
Jody Gerut hit for reliever Ryan Dempster (5-3). Gerut
led off against Giants reliever Kevin Correia and drew
a walk. Jeff Fassero was called to face the Jose
Macias, who sacrificed as Gerut moved to second. Todd
Walker flied out, then the National League's leading
hitter,(.367) Derrick Lee, was intentionally walked.
With Gerut at second and Lee at first, Burnitz smoked
a single to right for the game-winner.
Pitching duties for Wednesday afternoon: The Giants
started Brett Tomko, who worked seven innings and gave
up five hits, two runs, three walks, and struck out
six batters.
Losing pitcher Correia (1-3) walked Gerut, who scored
the winning run.

Jerry Hairston, suffering from a bruised left calf,
sat out Wednesday's contest as well.
