Barry Zito pitched beautifully against the Los Angeles Dodgers once more, but as has been the case many other times before, it was rendered meaningless in the win-loss column.
Because the Giants couldn't score a single run off starter Chad Billingsley, who threw a complete-game shutout during which he gave up only five hits, Zito was tagged with a disheartening 2-0 loss at Chavez Ravine as hopes of a three-game sweep went up in smoke.
Zito had given up only a run through the first seven innings, but he ran into trouble in the eighth as his pitch count hit 110, and when manager Bruce Bochy pulled him in favor of Sergio Romo after he walked Andre Ethier, he was clearly frustrated with the outcome.
And then, when Romo gave up a flare single to Casey Blake that scored Rafael Furcal that gave the Dodgers a two-run lead, Zito was seen spiking a baseball in the dugout.
The only player to have more than one hit was Freddy Sanchez, who had two hits, but one of those came when third baseman Blake threw wide of first, but was credited with a single, in the eighth inning.
Their best chance for a rally came in the sixth, when Sanchez and Buster Posey each singled, but with two runners on and one out, it faded when Pablo Sandoval flied out and Juan Uribe grounded out.
