Giants ace Tim Lincecum had to miss the first All-Star appearance of his career tonight at Yankee Stadium after checking into New York Presbyterian Hospital, where he was diagnosed with the flu and dehydration Monday night.

According to an AP report, the 24-year-old right-hander failed to show up at the stadium before batting practice and National League pitching coach, Bob Apodaca, confirmed that Lincecum would not be available to pitch.

He was released from the hospital, and details surrounding the nature of his illness have not been forthcoming. Without him the National League team was one man short. Lincecum last pitched Sunday afternoon at Wrigely Field, where he had one-run outing and struck out nine Chicago Cubs, snapping San Francisco’s six-game slide.

Lincecum (11-2, 2.57) tied Juan Marichal by throwing 137 strikes before the All-Star, a record that is second most all-time for a Giants’ pitcher. Starter Jason Schmidt holds the record of 139 strikeouts thrown in 2003.
