Jason Schmidt is the unquestioned ace, not to mention the workhorse, of the Giants’ rotation, and he has been just that for the past five years now. It’s too bad that it doesn’t show in his win-loss record in the first half of the season.
For example, Schmidt has 105 strikeouts at the break, which ranks him eighth in the National League, as well as pitching the eighth most innings in the majors with 126 1/3 innings, including three complete games this year.
He was the lone Giant to be selected to the National League All-Star team, but he did not pitch on Tuesday night because he had pitched last Sunday afternoon at Los Angeles, taking the loss to the Dodgers.
Currently, Schmidt is third in the majors with a 2.78 earned run average. However, he doesn’t have the record to reflect his gaudy numbers; he has only a 6-5 record at the All-Star break.
The big right-hander hasn’t exactly had things work in his favor in his last two starts, either. In a road starts against Colorado on July 4, he went only five innings and gave up only one run on four hits but was still stuck with the loss as the Giants couldn’t get anything going on offense.
He had to take the loss in his last start in Los Angeles, as he went six innings and gave up three runs on seven hits, giving him his first losing streak of the season.
Currently, the Giants sit 3½ games behind the first-place San Diego Padres in the National League West. They face the Philadelphia Phillies in a three-game series at AT&T Park that starts Friday night.
