All the San Francisco Giants wanted out of Sunday’s game versus the Colorado Rockies was a victory, and head to Milwaukee on a good note.
Unfortunately, that did not happen, as Todd Helton hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 15th inning and the Rockies defeated the Giants 4-3 in 15 innings.
That was the third time in extra innings that the Rockies loaded the bases, and the third time was the charm, as Helton drove in Dexter Fowler, who led off the inning with a triple.
The five hour-24 minute game was the longest by time in Coors Field history and the second longest game in the team’s 18-year history.
It was a great series for Fowler, as he went 10-for-16 with four triples, seven runs and seven walks, with the Rockies taking three out of four from the Giants, who have lost eight out of their last 10.
Trailing 3-0 in the top of the eighth inning, Nate Schierholtz hit a leadoff home run off of Jason Hammel and Andres Torres hit an inside-the-park home run and then Travis Ishikawa tied up the game with a single to score Pablo Sandoval.
Hammel went seven innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, before being replaced by Matt Belisle, the first of six relief pitchers used by the Rockies.
Matt Cain also went seven innings, giving up three runs on six hits ,walking four and striking out six and then was replaced by Jeremy Affeldt, the first of eight relievers used by the Giants.
