Even though it would have into the record books as a loss, the San Francisco Giants probably wish that their game against the Colorado Rockies had called because of rain.

Instead of having the game called, the rains cleared in Denver and the Rockies defeated the Giants 6-1 behind the magnificent pitching of Jeff Francis and three relief pitchers, who held the Giants to just four hits.

The Giants defense did not help much at all, as they made four errors on the evening, including the third error of season by Omar Vizquel.

With the loss, the Giants blew a chance to pass the San Diego Padres and into first place, where they have not been since April.

In five innings of work, Francis gave up just one hit, a second-inning single to Jason Ellison.

Tom Martin came for the fourth straight game, and gave up just one hit in two innings of work.

Jose Mesa came on to replace Martin in the eighth inning and he also gave up just one hit.

The Giants were finally on the board in the top of the ninth inning, when Ramon Ramirez walked Vizquel and then Lance Niekro doubled in the veteran Vizquel for the Giants lone run of the evening.

After having to endure through 1-hour 47-minute rain delay, Giants starter Jason Schmidt did not return to the Coors Field mound.

Schmidt went five innings, giving up just four hits and allowing just one earned run, as he lost for the fourth time this season.

As a matter of fact, Schmidt is winless since striking out a team record tying 16 Florida Marlins on June 6 at AT&T Park.

Todd Helton hit his 10th home run of the season, a solo shot off of Schmidt in the bottom of the third inning.

Jack Taschner, who was recalled earlier in the day from the Giants Triple A team in Fresno came on in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Taschner was greeted rudely, as Garrett Atkins hit a solo home run, his 11th of the season off of the lefthander.
