After getting swept, along with being humiliated, last weekend by the crosstown A’s, the Giants suddenly woke up and beat the daylights out of the Arizona Diamondbacks for the past three days.
It came with a little side story to it as well. As the Giants finished off a three-game sweep of the Diamondbacks Thursday night, Brett Tomko, the starter who was banished to the bullpen in a shakeup by the team, picked up the save by pitching the final three innings of a 9-2 win at Bank One Ballpark.
In the process, the Giants pounded former teammate Shawn Estes, ripping him for seven earned runs on five hits and chasing him after only 2 1/3 innings. They did most of their damage in the second inning, where they collected five runs, three of them coming from Lance Niekro’s three-run homer.
Meanwhile, Giants starter Noah Lowry cruised through the revamped Arizona lineup, pitching six innings and giving up only a run and three hits, walking four and striking out five.
He also helped himself with the bat in his hands, knocking in a pair of runs on a double in the third inning.
