SAN FRANCISCO-David Ortiz may have taken just one at-bat in the series prior to Sunday’s game versus the San Francisco Giants, but what a second at-bat for “Big Papi.”

Ortiz hit a solo home run off of Tim Lincecum that landed in the San Francisco Bay (McCovey Cove), pacing the Boston Red Sox to a 5-1 win over the Giants before a sellout crowd of 41,528 at AT&T Park.

The Ortiz splash hit was the 72nd overall by a player and the 20th by an opposing hitter, the first since Miguel Montero of the Arizona Diamondbacks went into the drink on September 29, 2009 against Jonathan Sanchez.

Lincecum lasted just three innings, his shortest outing since going three innings against the Milwaukee Brewers on April 7, 2009 (Opening Day).

After Lincecum left the game, Dan Runzler came on to pitch two innings, striking out five in his 30th appearance, tying Jenrry Mejia of the New York Mets for the most appearances by a National League rookie in 2010.

All in all, the Giants bullpen pitched six innings, giving up just one runs on four hits, a base on balls and striking out 11.

The 15 strikeouts by the Giants pitchers on the afternoon tied for the most by the team this season in a non-extra inning game, as on June 16, 2010, the Giants pitching accomplished the feat against the Baltimore Orioles.

Jon Lester threw a complete game, allowing just one run on five hits, walking one and striking out nine, as he picked up his ninth win of the season.

Adrian Beltre hit a solo home run off of Sergio Romo, just the third home run of the season off a reliever this season at AT&T Park, the last time a reliever allowed a home run at home came on April 13, 2010, when Brandon Medders gave up a home run to Andy LaRoche of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Red Sox catcher Victor Martinez sustained a broken left thumb, the third injury in as many days for the Red Sox, who lost Dustin Pedroia to a broken left foot on Friday night and Clay Buchholz hyper extended his left knee in Saturday’s 4-2 victory over the Giants.

NOTES: Prior to the game, the Giants honored the five pitchers that have thrown no-hitters in the team’s history since moving to San Francisco in 1958. Juan Marichal, Gaylord Perry, Ed Halicki, John Montefusco and Jonathan Sanchez were all honored.

Barry Zito will take to the AT&T Park mound on Monday night, while the Los Angeles Dodgers will be making their first of three trips to the Bay Area this season, and will counter with Chad Billingsley.
