Barry Zito made his return to the Rogers Centre for the first time since pitching for the Oakland A’s, and unfortunately he left on a sour note.
Edwin Encarnacion hit a tiebreaking home run off of Zito in the bottom of the eighth inning ,as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the San Francisco Giants 3-2 in game one of their three-game series at Rogers Centre.
Encarnacion hit the first pitch he saw from Zito into the lower deck of the left field stands, as the third baseman drove in all three runs for the victorious Blue Jays.
This was the first home run for Encarnacion since June 4 , and it was a great night for Encarnacion, who entered the game mired in a 2-for-26 slump.
Encarnacion went 2-for-2 on the evening with a walk, while eight out of his last 16 hits have been home runs.
Despite the loss, Zito pitched his first complete game since May 19, 2009, allowing three runs on just four hits, walking one and striking out five.
Pablo Sandoval drove in the Giants first run of the evening ,as he walked with the bases loaded to score Freddy Sanchez.
Sandoval then drove in the Giants second run of the evening, as Juan Uribe scored on a ground ball to Alex Gonzalez.
With the loss, the Giants fall to 0-4 in American League stadiums this season, this coming after they were swept by the Oakland A’s at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum last month.
