Taking a four-game series from a team that has been riding high would have been a huge accomplishment for the Giants' continuing development as a potential playoff team.
They were two innings away from doing just that.
The Giants led 6-4 going into the eighth inning, but the bottom fell out for Guillermo Mota, as he gave up three runs in the inning, two of those coming on Brandon Phillips' triple that sailed over right fielder Nate Schierholtz's head.
Two batters later, Joey Votto's single scored Phillips, and the Giants couldn't break through in the ninth as they had to settle for a series split after a 7-6 loss Thursday afternoon at Cincinnati's Great American Ball Park.
Todd Wellemeyer kept the Reds off the scoreboard for the first two innings, but he was injured in the top of the third as he ran to first when he grounded into an inning-ending double play. With a 4-0 lead, reliever Denny Bautista entered the game and gave up four runs in the bottom of the third as Cincinnati tied the game.
However, the Giants took the lead in the fifth when new addition Pat Burrell, a San Jose native, reached on a fielding error, which resulted in Buster Posey scoring. Two innings later, Freddy Sanchez singled in a run, only a day after taking an 0-for-5, giving the Giants a 6-4 lead.
