Things just seem to get worse in a hurry for the Giants.
A day after rain postponed the series opener, the Giants dropped its eighth straight game when they were downed by the New York Mets, 5-1, and they fell to 10 games behind the National League West-leading San Diego Padres.
After Moises Alou, who went 4-for-4 against Mets pitching, hit a solo homer off Mets starter Tom Glavine to tie the score in the fourth inning, New York tagged Noah Lowry (2-6) for three runs in the fifth. Mike Piazza’s single scored a pair of runs, and David Wright quickly followed with his own RBI single.
On the plus side for the Giants, the beleaguered bullpen performed very well on Saturday. After Lowry was chased after 4 1/3 innings, Al Levine, Jim Brower, Scott Eyre and Tyler Walker combined to yield only a hit and a walk the rest of the way.
Also, Jason Ellison went 2-for-3 to raise his season average to .323.
