OAKLAND-Gio Gonzalez maybe in just his first full major league season, but the left-hander was dominant against the San Francisco Giants
Gonzalez pitched a career-high eight innings, retiring 20 Giants in a row from the second inning until he was pulled in the top of the ninth inning and the Oakland A’s defeated the Giants 1-0 before a sellout crowd of 35,067 at the Coliseum.
This was the fourth straight loss for the Giants, who have also dropped five out of six on this road trip thru San Diego, Arizona and Oakland.
Adam Rosales scored the only run of the game, as he scored on a Coco Crisp sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning.
Rosales was hit by a Matt Cain pitch to lead off the bottom of the inning, advanced to second, when Aubrey Huff bobbled a ground ball by Cliff Pennington and then went to third on a Rajai Davis sacrifice bunt and that would be the only offense Gonzalez would need.
Cain went eight innings, allowing just one run on five hits, walking just one and striking out four; however he lost for the fourth time this season.
In his career versus the A’s, Cain falls to 2-5 with a 2.44 earned run average in seven career games, including three complete games against the Green and Gold.
Bengie Molina went 0-for-4 on the afternoon, and is now hitless in his last 15 at-bats and is batting .129 (4-for-31) over his past nine games.
Pablo Sandoval saw his seven-game hitting streak come to an end, as he went 0-for-3 against Gonzalez; however he walked against A’s closer Andrew Bailey in the top of the ninth inning.
Bailey gave up a single to Edgar Renteria with one out, and then after striking out Freddie Sanchez, Bailey walked Sandoval after a lengthy battle on a 3-2 pitch; however Bailey came back to strike out Molina to end the game.
NOTES: Before the game, the A’s place Eric Chavez on the 15-day disabled list with two bulging disks in his neck
The Giants activated Edgar Renteria from the 15-day disabled list with a strained right groin, to make room for Renteria, Ryan Rohlinger was optioned to Fresno.
To make room for Casilla on the 40-man roster, the Giants transferred Emmanuel Burris to the 60-day disabled list.
