Matt Downs maybe a rookie, but he came up with one of the biggest hits of the young season for the San Francisco Giants.
Downs hit a two-run double in the top of the 12th inning, as the Giants defeated the San Diego Padres 7-4 at Petco Park.
It was the third hit of the game for Downs, who does not know what his future looks like, especially with Freddy Sanchez coming back very soon.
Things got dicey in the bottom of the 12th inning, as closer Brian Wilson gave up a two-run double to David Eckstein and after an intentional walk to Adrian Gonzalez, Wilson was able to get Chase Headley to strikeout to end the game.
This was the first victory for the Giants in eight games versus the National League Western Division Padres, who maintain their half-game over the second place Giants.
Andres Torres sent the game into extra innings, as he hit his second home run of the season, a two-run blast that scored Aaron Rowand just ahead of him.
Nate Schierholtz got the Giants on the board in the top of the fourth inning, as he singled in Pablo Sandoval with the Giants first run of the game.
Following the Schierholtz single, Eli Whiteside drove in Juan Uribe, as the Giants took a 2-0 lead; however that lead did not last long.
Actually, that lead last an inning and a half, as the Padres scored four runs off of Jonathan Sanchez, who did not allow a hit thru the first four innings.
Sanchez went six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, while not walking a batter and striking out seven.
Matt Latos, who nearly threw a perfect game against the Giants in his last outing, but settled for a one-hitter gave up two runs on six hits in also six innings of work.
Over the last six innings of the game, the Giants bullpen gave up two runs on five hits, while walking a combined four batters and striking out seven.
