The Giants delighted a Mother’s Day crowd at AT&T Park with a 3-0 shutout and a three-game sweep at the expense of the Colorado Rockies and their starter, lefthander Jorge DeLa Rosa (6 ip, 4 h, 3 er, 5 w, 7 k, 1 hr, 4-1). The winner was Ryan Vogelsong, on the return portion of his 13-year odyssey with the San Francisco franchise. He is now 2-0 on the season and was perfect through five innings (6.1 ip, 1 h, 1 w, 4 k, 2-0). He also hit a double to center, making his average .333 and treating the sellout crowd of National League fans who love seeing pitchers come to bat.

The win puts the Giants a game behind Colorado in the NL West standings. More to the point, the game was a textbook illustration of what made the reigning World Series Champions so exciting and successful in 2010. The key here is flexibility in the face of adversity. Riddled with injuries, the team utilized the strength of its system, bringing up Vogelsong, moving Buster Posey from behind the plate to first base with Eli Whiteside catching, shifting Miguel Tejada from shortstop to third base to replace the injured Pablo Sandoval, and having the hot-hitting Mike Fontenot take over at short. All these battlefield decisions, coupled with the key role of late 2010 acquisition Cody Ross, have helped make the Giants what they have been over the last fourteen months.

Ross was responsible for all three runs, hitting a single in the second and then a two-run homer in the sixth. Closer Brian Wilson racked up his eleventh save.

The Giants have a rare day off and then host the Arizona Diamondbacks for a three-game series beginning at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10. Starters are yet to be determined.
