J.T. Snow collected four hits while nearly hitting for the cycle and
drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, leading the San Francisco
Giants over the San Diego Padres 6-5 Tuesday night at SBC Park.
San Diego's Phil Nevin extended his hitting streak to 11 games when he
cracked an eighth-inning pinch home run off Giants' closer Armando Benitez,
a two-run blast that tied the game at 5-5.
Benitez (1-1) blew his second save in six chances, but picked up his
first win as a Giant. In the bottom of the eighth, Snow doubled into the
right-field corner to score Jason Ellison, who reached on an infield single
against Akinori Otsuka (0-2) and stole second.
Benitez retired Geoff Blum on a grounder to first with a runner on
second to end the game, but pulled up lame before reaching first base to
take the flip from Snow. Benitez was helped off the field by two trainers.
Snow doubled in the first inning, singled in the third and tripled home
a run in the fifth.
Mark Sweeney and Ramon Hernandez homered for San Diego.
Giants starter Jason Schmidt threw 131 pitches and took his second
straight no decision. He went 6 2/3 innings, giving up three runs, eight
hits and four walks, while striking out seven.
San Francisco took advantage of three Padres errors to take a 5-3 lead
in the seventh, when Pedro Feliz singled home two runs and Ray Durham
contributed an RBI. San Diego had taken a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh
when Ryan Klesko connected for a two-out RBI double.
Notes: Injured Giants outfielder Barry Bonds was presented the 2004 Player
of the Year award by the San Francisco chapter of the BBWAA. ... Felipe Alou
earned his 200th win as Giants manager ... Padres righthander Tim Redding
has given up 10 hits in 23 at-bats to right-handers. ... Vizquel is 7-for-7
in stolen base attempts. ... Snow has 18 career triples ... The Giants
optioned pitcher Jerome Williams to Fresno of the Class AAA Pacific Coast
League. Williams, who is coming back from elbow surgery last August, is 0-2
with a 6.48 ERA in four games. The Giants purchased the contract of
righthander Al Levine from Fresno.
