Pitching gem goes for naught in Giants loss

Jonathan Sanchez must love pitching against the San Diego Padres.

Who can ever forget what Sanchez did last July 10 against the Padres at AT&T Park, as he threw the first San Francisco Giants no-hitter since John Montefusco turned the trick against the Atlanta Braves at the now demolished Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium on September 29, 1976.

In his first start of the season, Sanchez did not disappoint the Giants faithful, as he allowed just one hit on the night, striking out 10; however the Giants were not able to score a single run and lost to the Padres 1-0 at Petco Park.

The only run scored in the game came on a sacrifice fly by Scott Hairston in the bottom of the fourth inning, as the Padres won their fifth straight game and the Giants lost for the third straight.

With the victory, the Padres move into a tie with the Giants in first place, as both teams have a 8-5 record thru the first 13 games of the season.

Matt Latos went seven innings, scattering just four hits, walking just one and striking out four and picked up his first win of the season.

Nate Schierholtz led off the top of the eighth inning with a triple, but was stranded at third base, as Eli Whiteside, Bengie Molina and Eugenio Velez were retired by Mike Adams to end the threat.

Pablo Sandoval walked with one out in the ninth inning, and Andres Torres came on to run for Sandoval, and advanced to third on a Aubrey Huff single.

Unlike last night, Juan Uribe was not unable to come up with the big hit off of Heath Bell, as he flew out to short field, where Scott Hairston made a perfect throw to the plate.

After the Uribe flyout with two out, John Bowker struck out swinging to end the game with runners on the corners.
