SAN FRANCISCO - When former San Francisco 49ers
quarterback Steve Young waved to the crowd with the
Giants down last Wednesday night at SBC Park, he might
have been like the Pope, trying to bless the Giants as
they took on the Arizona Diamondbacks, attempting to
fight through the gloom of a 2-5 road trip.
Javier Vazquez, making his fifth appearance, put his
victory in the books with seven shutout innings as the
Diamondbacks beat the Giants 2-1. Vasquez has won four
of his last five decisions against the Giants while
his supporting cast defended well enough to secure the
victory.
Giants left-hander Noah Lowry was effective, striking
out four during his six innings of work, but
ultimately it was Troy Glaus' sacrifice fly that
allowed Royce Clayton to score what proved to be the
winning run, making it 2-0 Arizona in the second
inning.
It wasn't as if the Giants did not pull out all the
stops, fighting throughout the game offensively with
consistent hitting. Edgardo Alfonzo livened things up
with a base hit in the 7th and was 3-for-3 with three
singles.
The Giants hit into three double plays Wednesday
night. In the ninth inning, a Deivi Cruz sacrifice
fly put the crowd back on their feet as Mike Matheny
scored and ended the shutout bid by Arizona.
The Giants dropped to fourth place in the NL West, but
they will look to beat Arizona on Thursday.
