SAN FRANCISCO-On a blistery rainy Sunday afternoon, the San Francisco Giants and the Seattle Mariners took to the field for one final exhibition game.
Ichiro Suzuki led off the game with a single, and then scored on a Jose Lopez single, as the Mariners defeated the Giants 7-1 before a rain-shortened game that lasted 5.2 innings at AT&T Park..
Things got even worse for the Giants in the top of the third inning, as pitcher Todd Wellemeyer walked three batters and then gave up a two-run double to Adam Moore, walked Jack Wilson and then struck out pitcher Jason Vargas for the second time on the afternoon.
Wellemeyer broke up Vargas’ no-hitter on a sharp single to center field and Andres Torres followed up the Wellemeyer single with a single, Eugenio Velez grounded out to Josh Wilson to end the threat.
Following the third inning, Wellemeyer was replaced by Horacio Ramirez a left-handed reliever.
Wellemeyer went three innings, giving three runs on three hits, while walking six and striking out three; however he was on the short of the decision and ended the spring with a 3-1 record.
The 23 victories during spring training are the most by the team since they won 25 games during the 1964 spring training.
Brandon Crawford, Travis Ishikawa and John Bowker singled consecutively, as the Giants scored their first run of the afternoon, but it was a play by the ball dude down the right field line that made the crowd rejoice on this rainy afternoon.
The unidentified ball dude made a diving catch down the right line.
Matt Tuiasosopo, the son of former San Francisco 49ers lineman Manu Tuiasosopo and the brother of former Oakland Raiders quarterback Marques Tuiasosopo slammed a solo home run half way the empty left field bleachers, as the Mariners took a 4-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning.
The Mariners would add three more runs, fueled by three singles and a dropped flyball by John Bowker in right field.
Ramirez went 2.2 innings, allowing four runs on six hits, while not allowing a walk and striking out one before being replaced by Henry Sosa.
Vargas went five innings, giving up just one run on five hits, not walking not a batter and striking out three, as he ended his spring with a 1-1 record.
