SAN FRANCISCO--The San Francisco Giants are looking forward to their opener in San Diego Monday night at Petco Park. The Oakland A's will be hosting the New York Yankees at the Oakland Coliseum.
The Giants will be starting Jason Schmidt and for San Diego Jake Peavey a 4:05PM. The game last Sunday at AT&T Park was kind of anti climatic going into the regular season. The A's won their last pre-season game of 2006 before a paid crowd of 30,649 at AT&T Park.
Under cloudy skies, it was chilly and no rain which came later but didn't interfere with the game at 52 degrees at game time. The time of the game was 2:07 and it was an indication of the interest of the game which many said "just play it and get it over with."
The Giants had Jamey Wright, a 31 year old free agent acquisition on the mound.
Wright was hit for five runs surrendered seven hits in the ball game in six innings pitched.
Giant’s manager Felipe Alou said that he like what he saw in Wright's game, "Wright threw the ball well and he had only one bad inning." said Alou. It was an entertaining game getting ready for the season with many fielding changes.
The Giants enter 2006 with only 11 players from their 25 man roster opening day roster which was at the close of the 2005 campaign.
Giants have Matt Morris ready to make a start in San Diego on Tuesday at Petco. Tim Worrell a right handed reliever has been tabbed for closer now that Armando Benitez knee has re-flared up again and been placed on the disabled list.
The Giants will have also starters infielder-outfielder Mark Sweeny and shortstop and returning Giant Jose Vizcaino. Giants General Manager Brian Sabean has also acquired Steve Finley in the off season who will be a huge bat in the Giant lineup and also pitcher Steve Kline is expected to produce results for the Giants. The Giants who open the three game series Monday night at San Diego will really have a look see what this roster and line up can do against the NL Western Division Champs.
The Giants return home after the series on Thursday for four games against the Atlanta Braves.
Giants of interest: This is the Giants 124th season as a franchise whether in San Francisco or New York the Giants have 10,037 wins versus 8559 all time loses.
That is .540 over the period the Giants are the only North American sports franchise to win 10,000 games.
The Giants who got three runs and seven hits in the ball game committed no errors in the last spring training contest of 06 and for the A's who won it five runs, and nine hits.
Ray Durham for San Francisco hit a triple and ultimately scored.
JC and Kenny G's Giant Footnotes: Alou said about his team going into 2006, "these are quality fielders and I feel good about going into the season and we have a better bull pen and Barry is going to be going from the start." said Alou.
Alou is happy with his back up catcher to Mike Matheny, Alfonso Eliezer. Eliezer is looked at as a weapon that the Giants didn’t have last year.
Alou talked about Bonds and that he's confident that he can stay healthy, "Bonds gives me confidence I don't want to talk about the investigation he's under going.” said Alou. Reliever Benitez is probably out for two weeks and four regulars who played in the world baseball classic the Giants had the largest represented contingent of any Major League club in the classic.
