Scary Barry's Commentary: The Flawed Strategy Of The San Francisco Giants
Folks, nowadays in Major league baseball its bash or bust! Notice how stolen
bases and bunting for base hits are now passe'. On the local scene the Giants
have chosen the bash or bust approach. Unfortunately for them, their present
lineup is mostly bust! The departure of Ellis Burks left a huge gap in the
offense that has yet to be filled. Only Rich Aurilla and Barry Bonds are
really batting at a high level. One can only question the way the batting
order is arranged and why some players are warming the bench, watching others
go bust. For example, I believe that Bobby Estalella is a legitimate power
hitter who needs more game time to develop, while Santiago is getting most
of the work behind the plate. The Giants have had 12 inning games, 18 inning
games, where they just couldn't drive in baserunners. How can you have hitters
sitting on the bench? The list of those not contributing enough is
long, Marvin Benard, Russ Davis, J.T. Snow, Armando Rios and others. Marvin
Benard is having his second straight subpar season at the plate, plus his
lack of defensive skills in centerfield are costing the Giants many
games. It's the same at third base where Russ Davis is the strikeout king at
the plate and has stone hands in the field. The often injured J.T Snow is
looking less like a Golden glove fielder everyday and is a no show at the
plate. Armando Rios is not consistant at the plate and still learning how to
play the outfield. The pitching staff has turned things around but get little
support from the Giant's feeble offense. The Giants are so slow afoot in the
basepaths that it takes them four hits just to score one run! The Scary one
thinks the Giants should abandon the bash or bust approach and get back to
the basics. It would be refreshing to watch the hit and run play or someone
laying down a decent bunt. They should also retrain all their base
runners, who seem lost all the time and get doubled up for no good reason. The
basic approach is working very well for the Seattle Mariners, who dumped high
ticket, over hyped players like Alex Rodriguez and Ken Griffey Jr. Without a
potent batting lineup, the bash or bust approach is doomed to certain
failure. Give it up Giants!
