Scary Barry's Commentary: Why Baseball Needs A Salary Cap - Just Ask The San Francisco Giants
Resuming regular season play after the the All-Star game, the Giants immediately gained ground on the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Things were indeed looking up. Now in the last week injuries have reversed the positive situation. Recently Barry Bonds,Reggie Sanders and for a time Jeff Kent all went down due to injuries. Then on July the 26th , in a thursday night game, the Giant's centerfielder Tsuyoshi Shinjo also went down due to an injury. The result of this has been the loss of four out of the last five games and losing ground to the division leading Arizona Diamondbacks. Without their starting crew on the field the Giants are in a free fall mode. The backups for the Giants can't hold the line. Position by position they are at best only adequate on defense or at bat. Ramon Martinez has been displaying his versatility in the field, playing different infield positions and even a stint in the outfield. Yet Ramon has kept everyone guessing when it comes to making the plays and is an erratic hitter at the plate. Good old Shawn Dunston keeps on rolling like old man river but is only batting 218. at the plate! At first base its JT Snow , the golden glover who is now just an overpriced backup because of his poor performance at the plate. Damon Minor who has replaced him as a starter is still learning the ropes. The Giants don't have any quality in their lineup except for a few starters. When the money players aren't on the field the Giants are playing like a triple A team at best. Without a salary cap the Giants just consist of three or four top major leaguers, with backups filling the rest of the lineup! Without the bats of Barry Bonds and Reggie Sanders in the lineup , Rich Aurillia ,Jeff Kent and Benito Santiago are no match for good pitching. Defensively these players are not even close to the best at their positions. The Giants can't win a pennant let alone the World Series with a few stars and a supporting cast of that is only adequate. They can't buy their way into the top spot like the deep pocket New York Yankees! Many of the Giant's players are really minor league players disguised as Major leaguers! The Giants are not alone in their situation. If Major League baseball doesn't get a salary cap soon, watching some teams will be like eating junk food, while watching other will be like eating steak! Right now watching the Giants is like eating day old junk food. It will take more than a microwave to turn things around for the Giants.
