A pair of long-range shots in the final six seconds of the game turned joy into misery in Tennessee as Stanford’s undefeated and second-ranked women’s team dropped a 70-67 thriller to the Lady Vols. Despite trailing by 11 points with 6:51 remaining in the game, the second ranked and undefeated Stanford Cardinal were able to make a dramatic comeback to tie up the game; however Shana Zolman hit a dramatic three-pointer which gave Tennessee the win.

Kelley Suminski had tied up the game at 67 with a three pointer with 5.1 seconds remaining.

Instead of calling a time out, Lady Vols coach Pat Summitt allowed Zolman to bring up the ball up the court and let fly the shot.

Zolman hit the shot from about 25 feet away as the buzzer sounded.

The entire Lady Vols bench ran onto the court to congratulate Zolman on hitting the shot; however the officials went to the video monitor to see if the shot left Zolman’s hand in time.

The officials confirmed what replays had showed, and the basket counted giving the Lady Vols a dramatic three-point victory over the second ranked Cardinal.

This is the ninth straight time that the Lady Vols have defeated the Cardinal, including the elimination of the Cardinal in the Elite Eight of last season’s NCAA Tournament at the Lloyd Noble Court on the campus of the University of Oklahoma. Tennessee has handed Stanford its first defeat of each of the past three seasons.

The Cardinal have not defeated the Lady Vols since 1996, when current Cardinal assistant coach Charmin Smith was a student-athlete at Stanford.

Shyra Ely led the Lady Vols in scoring with 21, with Suminski led the Cardinal also with 21 in the loss for the Cardinal.

Freshman sensation Candice Wiggins, who helped lead the comeback, chipped in with 15, T’Nae Thiel scored 11 and Brooke Smith added 10 in the loss.
