STANFORD-It may have taken 11 years to accomplish, but the Women’s Basketball team at Stanford University can finally get that monkey off their back.
Roslyn Gold-Onwulde scored nine of the final 10 points for the Cardinal, and Candice Wiggins hit one of two free throws with 28.6 remaining in overtime and the fifth-rank Cardinal defeated the number one ranked and undefeated Tennessee Lady Vols 73-69 before 7,172 at Maples Pavilion.
This was the first time since December 15, 1996 that the Cardinal defeated the Lady Vols and the first time they defeated them at Maples Pavilion since December 16, 1995.
Candace Parker came up huge for the Lady Vols, as she scored a game high 25 points, 10 rebounds, four blocks and two steals for the reigning National Champions.
Parker made one of two free throws with 30.5 seconds remaining in regulation, and then hit a jumper with 7.4 seconds to send the game into overtime.
With 16.4 seconds remaining in regulation, Wiggins had a chance to seal the game; however she missed two free throws that setup Parker’s eventual game-tying shot.
“The overtime game, I blame that totally on myself,” said Wiggins. "I have to hit those free throws.”
Sophomore Jayne Appel played an outstanding game, as she scored 19 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, blocked four shots and added three steals.
Appel scored 11 of her 19 points in the second half.
“At halftime, they told me to stop playing scared and just go up with it,” said Appel. "We had 20 minutes to leave everything on the floor.”
Freshman Kayla Pedersen played an outstanding game against Parker.
Gold-Onwulde, who came up huge in overtime scored 13 points.
Alexis Hornbuckle added 15 points for the Lady Vols, who return to the floor on January 2, 2008 with a game against the DePaul Blue Demons in Chicago.
The Lady Vols led at one point in the first half by 11 points but this Stanford team did not go away and clawed back into the game and finally got the reigning National Champions.
“We had a lot of breakdowns and they came together, made passes and shots they needed to make,” said Hornbuckle. “It's disappointing, but Stanford is great. It's hard to hold them down. You saw that tonight.”
The Cardinal came up huge at the free throw line, as they went 23-for-32, while the Lady Vols went just 6-for-10 from the charity stripe.
This was the 699th win for Cardinal head Tara VanDerveer, who will go for number 700 on Friday night, when the Cardinal open up conference play against the Washington State Cougars.
In the 44 previous meetings against the Cougars, the Cardinal are a perfect 44-0.
