STANFORD-In what many people would think would be a cakewalk over a less superior team, the Stanford Cardinal were able to pull out a close victory.

Anthony Goods scored 25 points, while Landry Fields added 18 and the Cardinal hung on to defeat the Cal State Northridge Matadors 103-85 before 6,593 at Maples Pavilion.

Asides form Goods and Fields, all five Cardinal starters topped the double figure plateau, as Lawrence Hill, Mitch Johnson and Josh Owens each scored 14 for the victorious Cardinal, who move to 2-0 on the young season.

Goods scored 15 of his game-high 25in the first half, as the Cardinal raised their record against the Matadors to a perfect 4-0.

This was the first time that the two schools faced each other since December of 1993, when the Cardinal defeated the Matadors 89-58 at Maples Pavilion.

This is the first time that the Cardinal have topped the 100-point plateau in a game since scoring 111 against the Harvard Crimson in a 111-56 victory on November 9, 2007.

Josh Jenkins led the Matadors with 24 points before fouling out with 4:59 remaining in the game, while Rob Haynes added 11 for the Matadors, who are the odd-on favorites to make it to their second NCAA Tournament appearance in school history out of the Big West Conference.

“Personally, I needed to take control of the game,” said Jenkins.

Jenkins hit first five shots in both the first and second halves, as he scored his career high against the Cardinal.

Jenkins’ previous career high was 23, that he scored against the Rider Broncos in the ESPNU Bracketbusters at the Matadome on February 23, 2008.

While a member of the Big Sky Conference, the Matadors made it to the “Big Dance,” for the first time in school history, where they would lose to the Kansas Jayhawks 99-75 at the University of Dayton Arena in Dayton, Ohio.

The Cardinal took advantage of the game at the free throw line, as they went to the “Charity Stripe,” a total of 47 times, making 40, while the Matadors only went to the line a grand total of 12 times, making nine.

“Forty-seven to 12, that is a big disparity,” said Bobby Braswell, talking about the free throw difference in the game.

It what was a game of runs, the Cardinal went on an 11-0 run in the first half after trailing the Matadors 18-14.

When it was all done at the end of the first half, the Cardinal went on a 38-24 run to end the first half with a 52-42 lead.

The Matadors went on a 14-4 run to start the second half, and tied up the game at 56-56 after Haynes hit a three-pointer to tie up the game.

After the Cardinal went on another run, the Matadors came back to tie up the game at 70 following a Rodrigue Mels three-pointer.

“We couldn’t get over that hill,” said Jenkins.

Following the Mels three-pointer, the Cardinal went on 33-15 run over a to end the game that saw both Jenkins and Galick foul out.

“33-15 run, hurt us, foul trouble hurt us,” said Braswell.

Before fouling out, Galick, who transferred from Pepperdine after the 2006-2007 season scored 14 points in his Matadors debut.

Galick was forced to sit out last season due to NCAA transfer rules.
