STANFORD-Every four years the USA Women’s Basketball team goes on a tour of the major universities around the United States.
On Thursday night, their final stop on their eight-game tour was none other than Maples Pavilion, the home of the fifth ranked Stanford Cardinal.
“We were doing our civic duty,” said Tara VanDerVeer.
Sue Bird of the Seattle Storm scored 19 points, as the United States Women’s team swatted the Cardinal 97-62.
Seimone Augustus, who plays for the Minnesota Lynx added 16, as the United States ended their tour with a 35-point victory.
Both Kara Braxton of the Detroit Shock scored 15 and Kara Lawson of the Sacramento Monarchs added 14 for the Americans.
Diana Taurasi, who plays for the WNBA Champion Phoenix Mercury added 13 in 23 minutes of action.
Freshman Kayla Pedersen led the Cardinal with 11 points, while sophomore Jayne Appel and junior Jillian Harmon each added 10.
Senior Candice Wiggins, who played with the U.S. team all the way up until the team left for Chile scored seven points.
“Glad to see Candice out there,” said Anne Donovan.
Another former UCONN Huskies star, Swin Cash added seven for the U.S. team.
Cash, who plays for the Detroit Shock played her college ball with Taurasi and Bird for head coach Geno Auriemma, where they helped the Huskies to National Championships in 2002, 2003 and 2004.
This was the third time that the Cardinal have hosted the U.S. team.
During the 1995-1996 season, the U.S. team that was coached by VanDerVeer defeated the Cardinal 100-63, as they went 20-0 on their tour of college campuses.
Four years later, the U.S team went 20-1, as they lost to the University of Tennessee Volunteers 65-64, when Lawson, who was a freshman on that team scored the final basket of the game for the Lady Vols.
This was a homecoming for Jamie Carey, who played for the Cardinal during her freshman season of 1999-2000, before she missed the next two season due to post-concussive symptoms. Carey then transferred to the University of Texas, where she played for legendary women’s coach Jody Conradt.
“Honor to come back to Stanford,” said Carey.
This is the end of the line for the U.S. team until they meet again to get ready for the Beijing Olympics next summer.

10/31: Maryland 90-73
11/02: Connecticut 90-74
