Nate Whitaker’s 30-yard field goal as time expired gave Stanford a stunning 37-35 come-from-behind Pac-10 football victory over visiting Southern California Saturday at Stanford Stadium.

It was the Cardinal’s third win over USC in the last four seasons.

For most of the game, it was Stanford scoring, then the Trojans pulling into a tie, which happened four times before USC surged ahead in the final minutes of the fourth quarter.

USC I4-3 overall) took a 35-34 lead in the see-saw battle with 1:15 to play when Allen Bradford rushed up the middle for a three-yard touchdown run. Joe Houston’s extra point put the Trojans up by one point.

Stanford (6-1, No. 16) grabbed a 34-28 lead with 9:35 remaining in the fourth quarter when Andrew Luck connected with Doug Baldwin for a seven-yard scoring pass. Whitaker, however, hit the left upright with the PAT attempt.

Luck completed 20 of 24 passes for 284 yards and three touchdowns for the Cardinal. Stepfan Taylor carried 23 times for 113 yards, as Stanford outgained USC on the ground 200 yards to 113.

Trojans quarterback Matt Barkley threw for 384 yards and three touchdowns, completing 28-of-45 passes. Robert Woods was on the receiving end of all three USC scoring strikes, hauling in 12 passes for 219 yards.

Southern Cal had the edge in total yards, 499-484.
