STANFORD-The Stanford Cardinal will have to wait another week to pickup that elusive first Pac-10 win at the New Stanford Stadium.
The Cardinal has not won a home game in conference play since defeating the Arizona State Sun Devils on October 22, 2005.
As fate would have it, the Cardinal faced those same Sun Devils at Stanford Stadium to end their season-opening four-game homestand.
Ryan Torain carried the ball 16 times for 106 yards, as the Sun Devils defeated the Cardinal 41-3.
Rudy Carpenter went 20-for-27 for 259 yards and a one touchdown, as the 25th ranked Sun Devils raised their record up to 5-0 on the season and 2-0 in Pac-10 play.
On the other side of things, the Cardinal falls to 1-3 on the season, with all three of their losses coming in Pac-10 play.
“We need to do a better job as coaches and our players need to execute better themselves. Tonight was the first time tonight I feel we haven’t gotten better this season, and I feel we need to regroup and keep working,” said Jim Harbaugh.
Anthony Kimble was held to just 20 yards just one week after rushing for 119 yards, and coming within 48 yards of tying the school record for most all-purpose yards in a game.
T.C. Ostrander went 20-for-35 for 237 yards and a one interception.
“We didn’t execute tonight, the run game hurt but we weren’t very effective on the offensive side of the ball tonight. They (Arizona State) did a good job, but they didn’t show us anything that we didn’t know and didn’t prepare for throughout the week,” said Ostrander.
Thomas Weber got the Sun Devils on the scoreboard in the first quarter, as he kicked a 41-yard field goal thru the uprights.
Weber lengthened the Sun Devils lead up to 6-0, as he connected for a 32-yard field goal after Ostrander fumbled the ball that was recovered by Dane Guthrie.
Carpenter hooked up with Rudy Burgess for a 62-yard touchdown, and after a two-point conversion by Keenan Herring, the Sun Devils led the Cardinal by two touchdowns.
“Coach said someone has to go out and break the ice a little and Rudy (Carpenter) called my number and got me the ball and I was able to go out and make a big play. I think that I was what got us started got the momentum building,” said Burgess.
On the ensuing Cardinal possession, Ostrander’s pass intercepted by Omar Bolden, who returned it 32 yards for a Sun Devils touchdown.
The Cardinal finally got on the board, as Derek Belch kicked a 44-yard field with no time remaining in the first half.
On the evening, Belch went 1-for-3 on field goal attempts, as he missed a 47-yarder in the second quarter and a 44-yard try in the fourth quarter.
Weber added two more field goals, a 38-yarder and an 18-yarder to lengthen their lead.
Dimitri Nance raced 17 yards to the end zone, as the Sun Devils raced their lead up to 34-3.
Herring put the finishing touches on the rout, as he ran 72 yards to the end zone.
On the evening, the Cardinal were held to a negative two yards rushing.
Richard Sherman was the leading Cardinal receiver with six catches for 105 yards.
On the other side of the ball, Burgess was the leading receiver for the Sun Devils, as he hauled in seven catches for 137 and a 62-yard touchdown.
In all, Burgess led the Sun Devils with 149 All-purpose yards, as he also gained 12 yards via kickoff returns.
NOTES: The Cardinal now head out on the road for the first time this season, as they will head to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, where the number one ranked USC Trojans await the Cardinal next Saturday afternoon.
In last year’s meeting at Stanford Stadium, the Trojans shutout the Cardinal 42-0.
The Trojans are coming off a hard fought 27-24 victory over the Washington Huskies at Husky Stadium.
