STANFORD-In the end, you knew that the Oregon Ducks would find a way to pull away from the Stanford Cardinal and win going away.
Former San Leandro quarterback Dennis Dixon tore up the Cardinal defense for 27-for-36 for 367 yards and four touchdowns as the 13th ranked Ducks defeated the Cardinal 55-31 at Stanford Stadium.
Things looked bleak for the Cardinal from the first play of the game, Dixon hooked up with former De La Salle wide receiver Cameron Colvin for a 71-yard touchdown pass to give the Ducks a 7-0 lead just 15 seconds into the game.
After a Jay Ottovegio punt, the Ducks went up 14-0, as Jonathan Stewart scored on a 10-yard run thru the Cardinal defense.
The Cardinal finally got on the board, as Derek Belch kicked a 39-yard field goal to narrow the Ducks lead down to 14-3.
Dixon then extended the Ducks lead up to 21-3, as he scampered in from four yards out after Andiel Brown returned a Ottovegio punt 64 yards to the Cardinal five-yard line.
This is not the Cardinal teams from the Buddy Teevens and Walt Harris era, as this team came back with 28 unanswered points to take a 31-24 lead going into the halftime break.
Anthony Kimble scored on a 60-yard touchdown run, the longest running play for a touchdown by a Cardinal since J.R. Lemon scored on a 82-yard run against the USC Trojans at Stanford Stadium during the 2004 season.
Kimble then scored on a three-yard run to narrow the Ducks lead down to 21-17.
T.C. Ostrander then threw a touchdown pass to Ben Ladner to give the Cardinal a 24-21 lead with 4:09 remaining in the first half.
Ostrander then hooked up with Mark Bradford with 48 seconds remaining in the first half, as the Cardinal took a 31-21 lead.
It looked like the Cardinal would go into the locker room with a 10-point lead; however Matt Evensen hit a 26-yard field goal with 24 seconds remaining in the first half.
The Ducks scored 21 points in the third quarter, as they took a commanding 45-31 lead.
Evensen lengthened the Ducks lead up to 48-31 in the fourth quarter, as he hit his second field goal of the night, a 34-yarder.
Dixon threw his final touchdown of the evening, a 50-yard pass to Jaison Williams for the final margin of the evening.
Ostrander went 25-for-44 for 262 yards and two touchdowns.
Kimble carried the ball 16 times for 119 yards and two touchdowns.
Colvin, who played in the Bay Area for the last time as a collegian had eight catches for 136 yards and that long touchdown to open the scoring.
NOTES: The Cardinal return to the field on Saturday, as they will end their four-game homestand to begin the season with a tilt against the Arizona State Sun Devils.
