Bill Walsh was definitely smiling down on Stanford Stadium, as the Stanford Cardinal faced off against their South Bay rivals, the San Jose Spartans.

Walsh, who attended San Jose State and later coached the Cardinal passed away just before the start of the 2007 season from Leukemia at the age of 76.

After the passing of Walsh, this game was renamed the Bill Walsh Legacy Game, which on both occasions since being named has been won by the Cardinal, who defeated the Spartans 23-10.

Tavita Pritchard threw for 159 yards, threw a touchdown and ran for another, as the Cardinal made three straight victories at Stanford Stadium, if you go back to last year’s Big Game victory over the California Golden Bears.

Toby Gerhart ran for a career high 148 yards and a touchdown, as the Cardinal came back from 10-0 deficit to even their record at 2-2 on the young season.

What a terrible second half for the Spartans, who gained just 38 yards in the final 30 minutes, including a putrid -24 in the fourth quarter.

Aaron Zagory put the Cardinal in the lead for good, as he connected for a 52-yard field goal in the third quarter.

Following the Zagory field goal, Spartans quarterback Kyle Reed was unable to hold to the ball and it was immediately recovered by the Cardinal at the Spartans seven-yard line.

Despite getting the ball deep into Spartans territory, the Cardinal were forced to settle for Zagory’s third field goal of the evening.

Gerhart put the finishing touches on the scoring, as he scored on a two-yard run with nine seconds remaining in the game.

The Spartans got on the board first, as Jared Strubeck connected for a 38-yard field goal and they extended the lead up to 10-0, as Brandon Rutley scored on a four-yard scamper in the second quarter.

Pritchard got the Cardinal on the board with 38 seconds remaining in the first half, as plunged in from one-yard out to cut the Spartans lead down to 10-7 going into the locker room.
