STANFORD-It may have taken one complete season, and one game into the 2007 season, but the Stanford Cardinal has finally won a game at the New Stanford Stadium.

Derek Belch kicked three field goals, including a 52-yard field goal and a 50-yard field goal in the first half and the Cardinal shutout the San Jose State Spartans 37-0.

Belch also kicked a 37-yard field goal, as he accounted for all the Stanford scoring in the first half for the Cardinal.

The 52-yarder by Belch tied for the 10th longest in Stanford history.

It was also the longest Stanford field goal since Mike Biselli kicked a 52-yarder against the Washington State Cougars during the 1999 season, the last time the Cardinal made the Rose Bowl, where they lost to the Wisconsin Badgers 17-9.

What a night for sophomore Toby Gerhart.

The running back out of Norco High School ran for a career high 140 yards, on 12 carries and 1 touchdown.

Gerhart scored on a 13-yard scamper to the end zone to increase the Cardinal lead up to 16-0 in the third quarter.

This was the first game of the season for Gerhart, who missed the season opener against UCLA with a hamstring injury.

“”It felt good,” said Gerhart, talking about his hamstring.

Gerhart is the first Cardinal player to rush for more than 100 yards in a game since J.R. Lemon ran for 162 yards against the Washington State Cougars on October 2, 2004.

T.C. Ostrander went 18-for-28, for 220 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

“We did a lot of things offensively,” said Ostrander. “We made a gigantic improvement,” Ostrander added.

Richard Sherman had four receptions for 71 yards, including a 46-yard touchdown reception that gave the Cardinal a 23-0 lead.

“I know Bill Walsh was here tonight,” said Jim Harbaugh. “He was looking down on us,” Harbaugh added.

Anthony Kimble rushed for 83 yards, including a 14-yard touchdown run that gave the Cardinal 30-0 with just under 14 minutes left in the contest.

Ostrander hooked up with Austin Gunder for a 37-yard touchdown pass with 9:40 remaining in the game.

This was the first shutout by the Cardinal since they shutout the Michigan State Spartans at the 1996 Sun Bowl by the final score of 38-0.

The last time the Cardinal shutout the Spartans was during the 1972 season, as they shutout the Spartans 44-0 in the season opener.

This was the first time that the Spartans were shutout since the TCU Horned Frogs shutout the Spartans 42-0 on October 9, 1999.

NOTES: The Cardinal ran for 276 yards, their most in a game since they ran for 291 yards against the Arizona Wildcats on November 10, 2001, a game the Cardinal won 16-6.

Next week, the Cardinal play their third of four straight home games to start the 2007 season, as the Oregon Ducks travel to Stanford Stadium for a 7:00 kickoff.

In their game versus the Fresno State Bulldogs, the Ducks simply demolished the Bulldogs at Autzen Stadium by the final score of 52-21.

The Ducks are led by former San Leandro High School quarterback Dennis Dixon, who went 14-for-21 for 153 yards and two touchdowns.

On the ground, the Ducks are led by Jonathan Stewart, who ran for 165 yards on 17 carries and 2 touchdowns, including an 88-yard run.
