With a chance to start conference play with 2-0 record for the first time since the 2001v season, the Stanford Cardinal ran into a formidable opponent in the Arizona State Sun Devils.

Rudy Carpenter threw for 345 yards and three touchdowns, as the 15th ranked Sun Devils defeated the Cardinals 41-17 at Sun Devil Stadium.

On the evening, Carpenter went 27-for-36, as the temperature reached 100 degrees in the Arizona desert.

Through the first two games of the season, Carpenter set a school record, as he has thrown 733 yards in those two games.

Toby Gerhart gave the Cardinal an early 7-3 lead in the first quarter, as he scored on a five-yard run.

Gerhart gained 67 yards for the Cardinal and scored two touchdowns; however the Cardinal fell to 1-1 on the season.

The Sun Devils took the lead for good in the second quarter, as Carpenter hit Michael Jones with an 11-yard touchdown pass with 9:08 remaining in the second quarter.

Following an Aaron Zagory 29-yard field goal, the Sun Devils scored immediately, as Carpenter hit Kerry Taylor for a 45-yard touchdown pass just before the half.

Dimitri Nance gave the Sun Devils a 17-point lead, as he scored from a yard out in the third quarter.

The Cardinal cut the lead down to 10, as Gerhart scored his second touchdown of the game in the third quarter.

It was not a great game for Tavita Pritchard, as he went 11-for-18 for 97 yards passing and also threw two interceptions.
