SAN FRANCISCO – Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh opened his mind today about bringing a culture of success back to the Cardinals’ program in 2008 at the annual Bay Area football media day in San Francisco.

He will use this week’s opening training camp to decide between quarterbacks Tavita Pritchard, Alex Loukas and Jason Forcier for the starting position.

"The first thing I want to see is how they come back from the summer," Harbaugh said. "So often, quarterbacks and any anybody on the team can make big strides over the summer, but especially a quarterback. The first thing I want to see right off the bat: Has anything changed dramatically, has one guy really elevated his game?"

Since spring practices, Pritchard and Loukas both could handle the starting job, Harbaugh said. Stamford will not play a game before the home opener against Oregon State on Aug. 28. Harbaugh’s choice of starting quarterback will hinge largely on their performances during 22 practice sessions before the Cardinals’ final scrimmage.

"They were all making plays in the spring," Harbaugh said. "They all did a great job. They came to practice so engaged and on the practice field, every repetition is important to them. We got two guys we can win with."

Harbaugh also expressed confidence in an offensive line led by senior tackles Allen Smith, Chris Marinelli and 6-foot-6 Ben Muth, who made nine starts in Smith’s absence last year.

Stanford improved from a 1-11 record in 2006 to a 4-8 record in 2007 during Harbaugh’s first year at the helm. The Cardinals shocked NCAA football fans last year by beating No. 2 University of Southern California, 24-23, at Memorial Coliseum on Oct. 6.

"The standard this year," said Harbaugh, "is win a bowl game. Let’s win six or seven games. We’re going to shoot a little higher than that, hope to attain it and get the Emerald Bowl."
