Catching Up With WNBA Players From Stanford
With the start of the 7th season of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) this Memorial Day weekend, we should take a look on how the former members of the Stanford Cardinal are faring.
Unfortunately, only three of Head Tara VanDerveer's former players were on Opening Day rosters. Jennifer Azzi, who helped lead the Cardinal to their first ever NCAA Championship in 1990, is now playing with the San Antonio Silverstars. Last year, the Silverstars were known as the Utah Starzz, Azzi's Head Coach in San Antonio is Candi Harvey. Another player from the 1990 team, Sonja Henning is playing for former Detroit Piston Bad Boy Bill Laimbeer with the Detroit Shock. Former two-sport star Lindsey Yamasaki, who graduated in 2002 is playing for the New York Liberty and Head Coach Richie Adubato.
Six former Cardinal standouts were different Training Camps; however they did not make the final 12 women roster. Three players from Stanford's last Final Four team in 1997, were waived by their respective teams. Charmin Smith was waived by the Charlotte Sting on May 21, 1997 Naismith Winner Kate Starbird was waived by the Seattle Storm on May 20 and former two-sport standout Vanessa Nygaard was also waived by the Charlotte Sting on May 18. Bethany Donaphin, who graduated in 2002, was waived by her hometown New York Liberty on May 21. Cori Enghusen, who also graduated in 2002 was waived by the Detroit Shock on May 19 and Carolyn Moos who graduated in 2001, was waived by the Minnesota Lynx on May 15.
