To find their next men’s basketball coach, Stanford Athletic Director Bob Bowlsby traveled all the way across the country to Durham, N.C.
No, Mike Krzyzewski is not leaving the Duke Blue Devils, but his Associate Head Coach is finally going to get a head coaching job.
Johnny Dawkins, who played at Duke from 1983-1986 before playing in the NBA, primarily with the Philadelphia 76ers is coming to Stanford as the head coach of the Cardinal men’s basketball team.
After retiring from the NBA, Dawkins began his coaching career and for the past 11 years has been on the staff of the Blue Devils, which included a National Championship over the Arizona Wildcats in the 2001 National Championship Game.
Dawkins replaces 2007-2008 Pac-10 Coach of the Year Trent Johnson, who left the program after being hired as the head coach of the LSU Tigers.
In a twist of fate, the new Athletic Director at LSU is Joe Alleva, who was previously Duke’s Athletic Director, the same school where Dawkins not played but also coached.
