With a chance to possibly claim a share of the PAC-10 title, the Stanford Cardinal saw their hopes for that fall by the wayside. Darren Collison scored 24 points, as the UCLA Bruins came back from a 14-point deficit to defeat the Cardinal 77-67 in overtime to claim the PAC-10 championship outright.
This was the third consecutive PAC-10 championship for the Bruins, who are trying to become a number one seed in the NCAA Tournament when the brackets will be announced on March 16.
Russell Westbrook scored 19 points, while freshman Kevin Love picked up his 19th double-double of the season, as he scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Brook Lopez scored 18 points for the Cardinal, while his twin brother Robin scored 14, but it was not enough as the Cardinal lost for the fifth time in the last six games between these two PAC-10 powerhouses.
Since the arrival of the Lopez twins at Stanford, the only win by the Cardinal over the Bruins came on January 28, 2007, when the Cardinal came back from a halftime deficit the then second ranked Bruins 75-68 at raucous Maples Pavilion.
The Cardinal jumped out to a quick 12-2 lead, and led 28-14 at one point in the first half after a 7-0 run.
It looked the Cardinal would win the game, especially after Lawrence Hill hit a jumper with seven and a half seconds remaining in regulation; however Collison was fouled with two and a half seconds remaining and calmly hit two free throws to tie up the game and send it into overtime.
