Free throws are definitely an important part of a basketball game, and when Brook Lopez hit one with seven seconds remaining it was very important.
Lopez scored 23 points, including two free throws with two free throws with 18 seconds remaining in the game and the Stanford Cardinal escaped with a 67-66 victory over the Arizona Wildcats.
Brook’s twin brother Robin added 14, as the Cardinal were able to get a split in the Arizona desert.
Just two days after blowing a 15-point lead in the second half, and a seven-point lead with 1:49 remaining in regulation, before going onto to lose in overtime to the Arizona State Sun Devils, the Cardinal were able to hold off a stingy Wildcats team.
The Cardinal led the Wildcats 62-54 with 4:23 remaining in the game, but the Wildcats went on a 9-0 run to take a 63-62 lead when Chase Budinger hit a free throw.
Freshman Jerryd Bayless scored 31 points, as he topped the 30-point plateau for the third straight game.
The Cardinal led the Wildcats 65-63, but Budinger hit a three-pointer with 44 seconds remaining in the game to give the Wildcats, but it was Lopez’s free throws that were the difference.
The Wildcats had a chance to win the game in the waning seconds, but Budinger’s shot was partially tipped by Robin Lopez and the Cardinal got out of there with a one-point victory.
